Brief history of South Korea
South Korea, once united as Korea, was went through different dynasties, the Silla, Goyreo, and Joseon, each era rule by different rulers. At the end of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea was invaded by Japan causing Koreans to face harsh treatments on a daily basis. While Japan ruled over Korea, the Soviet Union invaded Korea causing the United States to take action. The Soviets occupied the north and the United States occupied the south. Due to the tension between both countries North Korea invaded South Korea, which is known as the Korean War. After three years of war, South Korea managed to push back North Korea up to the 38th parallel in 1953, ending the Korean War. After the war ended, it was hard for South Korea to bring itself back together until Park Chung Hee was elected as president. He brought prosperity and created a balanced economy in the first time in history of Korea. Shortly after his presidency ended there was a financial crisis that brought down the economy; however, the 16th president of the South Korea, Kim Jung Dae managed to pull South Korea out of the financial crisis while trying to foster a better relationship with North Korea, through the 'Sunshine Policy'. In 2016, Park Geun Hye was the first female president who was involved in a scandal caused her to be impeached.
